Dental Health Sciences at Sinclair Will Give You a Reason to Smile

The dental hygiene program has been in existence since 1973. With a Dental Hygiene Accreditation from the American Dental Association, Sinclair has the latest technology, including a contemporary dental patient simulation lab. The program also houses a dental hygiene clinic that provides a variety of services to the Dayton community and beyond.

Our department offers a two-year associate degree program that allows you to take various state dental boards and apply for state licensing. In addition to the degree program, the dental health sciences department also offers several training programs for continuing education.

This program might be for you if:

  • You are interested in working in the dental field.
  • You would like to work with a variety of people and perform multiple tasks.
  • You are looking to gain hands-on, practical experience while gaining a valuable education.

Working with the supervision of a dentist, dental hygienists provide educational, preventive and therapeutic services for patients/clients including: oral examinations; dental imaging; teeth cleaning; non-surgical periodontal therapy; sealants; fluoride treatments; and more. Dental hygienists are also able to work in private dental practices, public health programs, research facilities and higher education. In this career path, you are bound to take on a variety of tasks. And, Sinclair’s program is sure to give you the knowledge and experience it takes to succeed.

Short-term Technical Certificate

Expanded Functions for Dental Auxiliaries

The Expanded Functions for Dental Auxiliaries program is designed to prepare Certified Dental Assistants or Licensed Dental Hygienists to take the Expanded Functions for the Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) board examination administered by the Commission on Dental Testing in Ohio and to provide quality restorative patient care. This course includes 180 hours of instruction, progressing from the preclinical laboratory activities to clinical experience. This course is offered ONLY to Licensed Dental Hygienists and Certified Dental Assistants. Proof of current licensure/certification must be submitted with application. Instruction includes lecture/demonstration and laboratory activities. Didactic instruction includes review of tooth morphology, instrumentation and ergonomic principles, properties and manipulation of dental restorative materials, and techniques and procedures for restoring teeth with amalgam and tooth colored direct restorations.

Degree Programs

Associate of Applied Science - Dental Hygiene

Working with the supervision of a dentist, dental hygienists scale, polish teeth, chart abnormalities, take radiographs, apply preventive agents, impart dental health information and take health histories. This program, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, is designed to be completed in seven (7) consecutive quarters on a full-time basis. The general education courses and selected Dental Hygiene courses may be taken prior to admission to the program. A grade of 2.0 or higher is required in all courses. The student must successfully complete the application requirements as outlined in the Dental Hygiene admission packet. Life Health Sciences admission packets may be obtained from the office of Admissions (Building 10, Room 10112). Students must submit the Life Health Sciences application form by mail, or in person to Building 11, Room 11346. The graduate is eligible to take the Dental Hygiene National Board, the North East Regional Board or similar state boards, and to apply for state licensing.

Articulation & Transfer Agreements

Sinclair works directly with many four-year schools in Ohio and beyond to ensure the college credit you earn will transfer easily to those schools. By developing articulation agreements, formal agreements between colleges detailing the recognition of college credit between the schools, you will know you are meeting the requirements needed at the four-year school of your choice. Ohio Transfer Module

The Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degree programs fulfill the requirements for the Ohio Transfer Module at other public colleges and universities. Students in applied associate degree programs may complete some individual transfer module courses within their degree program or continue beyond their program to complete the entire transfer module.

Upon completion of the Ohio Transfer Module, students will be able to enter most Ohio four-year colleges and universities as a junior with your general education requirements completed. Find out more about the Ohio Transfer Module »
