Technology Changes… Advance Your Skills with Business Information Systems

The personal computer technology and the growth of information are reshaping the office and the role of the end user and information worker. Our department works to prepare graduates for employment and provide existing professionals with opportunities to update and enhance their current knowledge.

Programs in business information systems are designed to give you a competitive advantage as a job-seeker, while also teaching you valuable skills as an individual.

This program might be for you if:

  • You enjoy working with technology.
  • You like to be a part of a team, even as a decision-maker or leader.
  • You are interested in information technology and support.
  • You would like to learn more about how to use new technologies to maximize business productivity.

Students will gain experience in using technology for business administration, communication, and decision support. BIS programs combine courses in business software applications, business ethics, communications, customer service, decision making, and office procedures, which provide students with the skills they need for the everyday running of a business.

Certificate Programs

One-year Technical Certificate

Business Information Systems Information Processing

In this one-year certificate program, students receive specialized training necessary to work with personal computers and end-user software applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access. Also, students master the basics of customer service, work place technology and electronic files management to provide administrative support in a variety of entry level office positions.

Business Information Systems Medical Office Specialist

In this one-year certificate program, students receive specialized training necessary to work with personal computers and end-user software applications in a medical office. Students master the basics of medical terminology, medical office procedures, medical transcription and medical billing to provide administrative support in a variety of medical office environments.

Personal Computers in Business

Students learn how to use personal computers for business administration, decision support, and financial applications. The personal computers certificate is intended for those with higher education and/or skills to update their knowledge with personal computer techniques.

Short-term Technical Certificate

Call Center Certification

This certificate is designed for those seeking employment within a call center environment or those interested in improving their customer service skills and telephone techniques. Call centers have become quite sophisticated with effective measures for productivity. Students will learn how a call center operates and how the productivity measures are used. Students who complete this certificate can continue with a two-year associate degree in the BIS department and all courses will transfer.

Software Application for Professional Certification

This certificate provides office workers, managers, professionals, and those interested in acquiring knowledge for personal use the opportunity to develop and refine their skills in a variety of current software common in today’s work environments. Software applications included are word processing, spreadsheet, database, business presentations, desktop publishing, and Internet browser.

Associate of Applied Science - Business Information Systems

Current and future industry/business needs require information technology support staff competent in a number of software programs and capable of integrating applications to be more productive. Support staff members, as well as all information technology workers, are required to work in teams, actively participate as customer service agents, and use new technologies to maximize business productivity. Employment opportunities continue to grow in all businesses, governmental agencies, and industries both large and small.

Articulation & Transfer Agreements

Sinclair works directly with many four-year schools in Ohio and beyond to ensure the college credit you earn will transfer easily to those schools. By developing articulation agreements, formal agreements between colleges detailing the recognition of college credit between the schools, you will know you are meeting the requirements needed at the four-year school of your choice. Ohio Transfer Module

The Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degree programs fulfill the requirements for the Ohio Transfer Module at other public colleges and universities. Students in applied associate degree programs may complete some individual transfer module courses within their degree program or continue beyond their program to complete the entire transfer module.

Upon completion of the Ohio Transfer Module, students will be able to enter most Ohio four-year colleges and universities as a junior with your general education requirements completed. Find out more about the Ohio Transfer Module »
