Date: Friday, February 23, 2018
Time: 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM
Campus: Dayton
Location: Building 1, Room 1-001

Calculus, Linear Regression, and Matrices – What’s the Connection?

Speaker: Sinclair Mathematics Professor Eric Kraus

This presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided, and all students in attendance will be entered in a raffle for Sinclair prizes.

Abstract: Using calculus, we will derive the least squares estimates for a simple linear regression model.  Extending the concept to the multiple linear regression model, we will use matrix methods to find the least squares estimates, including the simple linear regression estimates as a special case.  Hands-on activities will emphasize matrices used in statistics and vector differentiation rules.  Data sets will illustrate the results developed, which include regression formulas many students merely memorize but want to understand more completely.

For any questions, please contact David Ericson at 937-512-3915 or david.ericson@sinclair.edu.
