He deserves recognition.” Dave has been known to impact student decisions in switching their majors to the Psychology field.
Irene Warren

Excellence in Course Related Service Learning Award
Irene Warren is an Adjunct Faculty in the Communication Department, having taught Interpersonal Communications, COM 206, at Sinclair for nearly 18 years. She began using Service Learning Winter 2010 as a way to creatively challenge her students, and engage them in active, hands-on, meaningful learning. When the Haiti earthquake happened in early 2010, she saw a critical opportunity to develop a course related Service Learning project. She states this project not only met course requirements and Sinclair’s Core Competencies, but also addressed needs of the Haitian people caused by the earthquake. The fund raising project included several components resulting in a check for $ 2,022.60, for the American Red Cross Relief in Haiti presented by the students to Sinclair’s Board of Trustees. Irene states, “This project energized me and gave me a new awareness and appreciation for student learning. The students embraced this project with enthusiasm, developed better self-concepts, found creative ways to present their research, raise money, learned how to work together, and developed great leadership skills”. Irene expanded her success with course related Service Learning to 11 Student Success courses taught at Courseview campus during Fall 2010 and Winter 2011. Through Irene’s hard work, and dedication “Poverty in Our Neighborhoods” is now a required Service Learning project in the SCC 101 Student Success curriculum at Courseview. “Her work", as stated by Bree Langemo, Associate Dean at Courseview campus, "is resulting in a long-lasting impact on Courseview students and the Warren County community”. One of her students shares, “For most of my life I was a quiet follower, I usually kept to myself and never volunteered for anything unless I was asked. Now thanks to Mrs. Warren, I have the confidence that I now know I can make a change. Thank you for this opportunity to learn, and grow as a student, citizen and person”.
