HIM 2110 Ambulatory Coding

Introduction to principles, guidelines and conventions for assigning ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes and CPT procedure codes to patient encounters for outpatient facility services. Students should possess proficiency in basic medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology. Additional out-of-class assignments are required. Three classroom, two lab hours per week.

Outcomes

  • Utilize Alphabetic Index and Tabular List of ICD-10-CM and CPT to appropriately assign codes for correctly identified diagnoses and procedures.
  • Apply national guidelines to identify what clinical information is appropriate to code.
  • Demonstrate the ability to correctly analyze National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits and Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) to accurately correct coding errors to ensure appropriate coding and reimbursement for ambulatory facilities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to correctly use the 3M encoder to code ambulatory scenarios and records and to utilize the various references, those supplied with the encoder and those on the Internet, to accurately code both diagnoses and procedures.
  • Exhibit the professional behaviors, attitudes, and values consistent with and appropriate to the entry-level HIM professional.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and medical terminology to correctly interpret clinical documentation.
