Outcomes

  • Identify those systemic diseases which may present with oral manifestations and differentiate these lesions from those caused by local factors.
  • Describe the caries process and compare and contrast the histological and clinical signs and symptoms of pulpal and periapical diseases.
  • Describe major pathophysiological features of selected disorders of the central nervous system.
  • Illustrate the gross structure and function of the kidney and describe the pathologic processes of obstructive and degenerative renal disease. Compare and contrast the etiology, signs and symptoms of urinary tract disorders and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Describe the hormonal regulation of blood glucose concentration and delineate the signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus.
  • Identify inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic lesions of the oral cavity comparing their similarities and differences in etiology, appearance, symptoms and treatment modalities.
  • Describe the cellular and tissue responses associated with disease and compare and contrast the histology of benign and malignant neoplastic processes.
  • Illustrate the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and describe the etiology and ramifications of selected disease processes associated with these organ systems.
  • Illustrate the basic anatomy of the gastrointestinal system and compare and contrast the etiology and manifestations of obstructive, hemorrhagic, inflammatory, neoplastic and reflux diseases of this organ system.
  • Identify and describe gross oral and dental malformations resulting from developmental processes or hereditary origin. Differentiate these from normal clinical variants.
  • Describe the successive steps involved in the inflammatory response and adaptive immune response to infectious agents. Describe the pathogenesis of HIV and compare the various forms of hepatitis.
