Sinclair Community College Graduate Secures Pathway to Elite College

2008 graduate receives one of country’s largest undergraduate transfer scholarships

DAYTON, Ohio (07/22/08) — A graduate of Sinclair Community College’s 2008 class has received the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. One of only 50 winners, Christine McHone will use the scholarship to complete a bachelor’s degree and attend law school at Columbia University.

Each year the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation works to identify the best community college students in the nation to receive its prestigious Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which awards up to $30,000 per year for up to three years. This year, 46 students were chosen from an applicant pool of over 700 students.

“At the top of our community college classes is a tremendous talent pool, largely untapped by elite colleges,” said Joshua Wyner, executive vice president of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. “Many of these students attend community college not because they lack the academic talent for a four-year institution, but because they lack the financial resources.”

McHone held a full-time position as Senior Accounts Receivables Representative for Accenture, while attending college and volunteering extensively. Originally from Kettering, McHone graduated from Sinclair in June with an associate degree in Political Science. She is leaving her position to pursue her bachelor’s degree full-time at Columbia in New York City.
