APA General Document Layout

General Notes:

  1. Use standard 8-1/2 by 11 white paper, single sided only.
  2. 12 point Times Roman or Courier typefaces are normal.  A sans serif font is appropriate for tables, charts, figures and the like.
  3. Italics are prefered over underlining.
  4. Use double spacing throughout.
  5. Use one inch margins on all pages.  If the paper is to be bound, you may need to add a half inch gutter on the left.
  6. Set alignment to left justify. Do not break words at the end of lines or use hyphenation.
  7. Order of pages:
    • Title Page (page 1)
    • Abstract (page 2)
    • Text (starts on page 3)
    • References (starts next page after text)
    • Appendixes (starts next page after references
    • Author Note (starts next page after appendixes)
    • Footnotes (starts next page after author note)
    • Tables (starts on next page after footnotes)
    • Figures (starts on next page after tables)
  8. Page numbers go in the top right corner of each page one half inch from the top and one inch from the right.
  9. Place the first two or three words from the title one half inch to the left of the page number on each page.  This page header and page number can be automatically included with MS Word's view | header and footer feature.
  10. Indent each paragraph one half inch.
  11. The title page consists of only three features--the running head, the title, and the author's name and affiliation (in addtion to the page header and number).  The running head goes in the top left of the title page below the page header and number.  It is typed in all capital letters and is preceeded by "Running head: ".  Running heads should not exceed fity characters. The title is typed in mixed case letters and is centered in the top half of the page. The author's name and affiliation are shown on the next two lines  below the title, centered, and typed in mixed case letters. Note: the author's name appears only once and only on the title page.
