Overly Broad Definition

Overly broad definition occurs when a writer's definition includes items which should not be included.

Example:

A baseball is a white spherical object. (Mothballs are white and spherical too.)

Strategy: Identify the item being defined along with its characteristics.  Demonstrate by example that at least one item exists which fits the characteristics but obviously doesn't fit the defined term.
