Failure to Elucidate

A failure to elucidate (make the meaning clear) occurs when a writer creates a definition that is harder to understand than term being defined.

Example:

Explain means to explicate or expound. (What the heck is an explication anyway?)

Strategy: Identify the term defined and the attributes of its definition. Demonstrate that the attributes of the definition are less understandable than the term being defined.
