The Visiting Scholars Committee is pleased to announce the theme for 2010:

Economic Recovery 101 – Build Your Own Economic Stimulus Package

 This year’s focus will be on speakers and activities that provide ideas and guidance for our students and the Dayton community to not only survive but to thrive in these challenging economic times.  The topics to be covered are myriad, but could include:

·        Entrepreneurship

·        Personal Financial Planning

·        Keeping families strong through challenging times

·        Educating for success in the 21^st century

·        Stress Management/Health and Nutrition

·        Business practices to recession-proof your business

Those are a few thoughts to get your creative juices flowing!  As you develop ideas, remember that the goal of the Visiting Scholars program is to appeal to a wide, community-based and student audience.  Partnerships between divisions and departments where there are complementary topics will be highly considered.

 The Committee is happy to welcome Management chairperson DeAnn Hurtado as our new chair, taking over from Kathleen Cleary.

The Visiting Scholars Committee is pleased to announce that thanks to the generous support of the John N. and Connie Taylor Endowment for Visiting Scholars, we were able to fund four different proposals from among those submitted during the past year.  (One had to cancel, but we will try to bring her again in the future.) The Committee began a new process this year, asking for faculty and staff members to submit applications for a visit.  This was very successful and resulted in the following scholars and experts being chosen for funding:    

 Dr. Barry Franklin, the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, visited campus in October of 2008.  While on campus, Dr. Franklin shared with students, faculty, staff and community members ways to prevent, halt and reverse heart disease. 

The Actors From the London Stage visited us again in February of 2009 to present Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare.  While in residence, the five actors also provided 35 workshops across campus in literature, writing, music, theatre and communication classes.  When they visited in October of 2006, the Dayton City Paper called their visit the “Coup of the Year,” for its impact on Sinclair students and community members.  Approximately 2000 people attended a workshop or performance during their last visit.

 Juan-Si Gonzalez, an internationally-known installation artist, will work with students to design and install a major work of contemporary art in the Sinclair Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery in February of 2010.  The artist will also give a presentation at the REACH (Realizing Ethnic and Cultural Heritage) Conference at Sinclair.
