Sinclair Community College is committed in its mission to the idea of cultural diversity to increase opportunity and enlarge the learning environment for students, faculty, and staff as well as the entire community. Over the last few years numerous initiatives have been undertaken to accomplish this objective. A testament to this institutional commitment is firmly rooted in Sinclair's vision for diversity.
Sinclair strives to create an open, supportive and responsive environment in which differences are valued, encouraged, and celebrated. The goal of all learning opportunities within this environment is to prepare people to live, learn, and work in a pluralistic world.
The purpose of this report is to provide a sense of what the College has achieved in the area of diversity. From this document, the future focus and direction can be determined to best meet the needs of the College. Hence, establishment and implementation of the Diversity Task Force. The next steps to be accomplished are:
- First, wider distribution of this document to the campus community to ensure that it is inclusive.
- Second, recommendations will be developed consistent with the Diversity Task Force.
- Third, a benchmarking strategy will be designed that provides for measurement and continuous improvement.
These strategies will ensure congruence between the College mission and related College initiatives.
- Minority Student Demographics
Numerous recruitment and retention strategies were developed over the last five years to address the needs of minority students at the College. These initiatives are outlined in Section II of this report.Most importantly, there is an Admissions Officer for Cultural Diversity in the Office of Admissions providing leadership to this program.
The results of these efforts are reflected in the enrollment data.

- Faculty Demographics
Prior to 1991, Sinclair Community College had maintained a level of 11-12 percent African-American faculty over a five-year period. This figure was well above the national average for colleges, but unacceptable for Sinclair. Various initiatives were put in place, but the results were always in the 11-12 percent range. New recruitment strategies and a "Grow Our Own" program were adopted in 1990-91.
