| The Sinclair Alumni Association has been in existence since 1954, though Sinclair Community College itself has been in existence since 1887. Since then, thousands of graduates have benefited from their education at Sinclair Community College. Today, more than 20,000 graduates are part of its living history. The college recognizes the important role these graduates play in the continuing growth of the institution and its support for the Sinclair Alumni Association is evidence. | ![]() |

| The association participates in special career fairs and other college events that help Sinclair graduates and students expand their education beyond the classroom. One of the association's major annual projects, Breakfast with Santa, allows youngsters to be introduced to the college at a young age. In his book, Origin and Development of Sinclair Community College 1887-1970 C. Chester Bussey writes about the origins of the Sinclair Community College Alumni Association as follows: | ||

Since 1924, the college has conferred degrees upon its graduates. The number of graduates was limited in number until the day school was established in 1946. However, since 1925 the growing number of graduates contributed to the present status and stature of the college. By 1969, approximately 1500 had graduated from Sinclair. However, it is estimated that more than fifty thousand people have attended its classes since 1887. | |
As Alumni have reached positions of significance in business and industry, they have created in the public mind an increasing awareness of Sinclair College and its accomplishments. Early efforts toward organized activities were not too successful, but this laid the groundwork for later developments.
In 1954, the first Alumni Association was organized. In 1961, John Rininger, Director of Development, assumed the duties of Alumni Secretary until his resignation in 1968. In 1959, the Alumni Fund was organized as the first consistent appeal to graduates for financial contributions to their college. The Alumni Fund became an annual project each year with a special objective determined by the Alumni Board of Directors. The Alumni Association President served as an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees until 1966. The Alumni Association proved its effectiveness in working in the very intensive campaign for the 1-mill levy which was passed by the voters on May 6, 1966.
Following the conversion of Sinclair College from a private to public community college, the Alumni Association was reorganized with a new constitution and by-laws reflecting its new role as a representative of the graduates of the college. The annual fund drive is now primarily for support of scholarships and other projects which cannot be financed with public funds.
Robert Barr has served since 1969 as Alumni Secretary. Barry Heermann served as interim secretary between the time that John Rininger left and Mr. Barr was appointed as Director of Public Information.
Robert Barr served in these capacities until the late '80s. At that time, Gary Honnert was hired as the new Director of Public Information which also included responsibilities for the Alumni program. Gary Honnert served in both capacities until the mid '90s, when a dedicated staff person was hired to serve the needs of the alumni and its alumni association program. The name of the position was updated to Alumni Coordinator and a Sinclair Alum, Pamela Horn, was its first program coordinator. Ms. Horn held that post until 1998 when another coordinator, Karen Usrey, also a Sinclair alum, was hired to fill the position.
Mr. Barr passed away in 1998. Though he left his official role as Director of Public Information and Alumni Secretary many years prior, he remained a dominant figure as a Sinclair representative throughout our community and a dear friend to many.
