Students in the SME division can choose from a wide range of alternative methods to earn college credit. Besides traditional classroom and laboratory settings, the division offers a variety of flexible learning formats.
Students who choose an alternative learning option are advised to plan the program with an academic advisor and a faculty advisor. To learn more, talk to a Academic Advisor in Room 11-346.
Distance Learning courses are offered via the Internet, TV Sinclair, CD, tape, or text-based materials. These courses are designed for students who want to earn college credit from Sinclair without coming to campus. In addition, Sinclair offers satellite training sites for various programs.
Off-campus classes for students are offered at various locations. Consult the class schedules in the current Bulletin to find out which courses are available off campus.
Weekend classes are available in selected program areas for students who need a flexible class schedule.
Associate of Technical Study (ATS) Degree Program is open to any student whose technical degree goals cannot be met through enrollment in one of Sinclair's existing technical degree programs. ATS students may design a degree which combines two or more technical areas. Please email Linda Pastore at linda.pastore@sinclair.edu for more details.
Cooperative Education links students with potential employers who offer practical work experience for a chosen career field. To find out more about the Co-op program, contact an Academic Advisor.
Credit for Lifelong Learning may be granted at Sinclair for what you already know. If you have work or other learning experiences, you may be able to translate these experiences into valuable course and degree credits. Contact the department chairperson who administers your program to review your options.
Sinclair's Academic Credit Assessment Information Center (ACAIC) informs students about non-traditional ways to receive Sinclair credit for previous college courses and for prior learning experiences. Some of the ways are listed below.
- Articulation (transfer) agreements between Sinclair and local high schools, colleges, and universities allow students to obtain Sinclair credit for predefined training.
- College level equivalency exams allow students to translate exam scores into credits at Sinclair. Credit by examination requires approval by the chairperson of the department in which the credits will be awarded.
- Program evaluations provide college credit recommendations for military, business, and industry training programs.
- Portfolio assessment is the process of evaluating a student's college-level learning, and awarding college credit for this learning. College credit may be awarded for a variety of learning experiences, including work, volunteer services, conferences, and vocational interests.
