Career Options

Powerplant mechanics may work on the engine (powerplant) of many types of aircraft, such as jets, propeller-driven airplanes, and helicopters; or, powerplant mechanics may specialize in one system of a particular type of aircraft, such as engine, engine-driven hydraulic pumps, or electrical system connections.

Possible job titles include:

  • Aircraft Maintenance Technician
  • Field Service Representative
  • Director of Aviation Maintenance
  • Production Machinist
  • Technical Assistant

Opportunities for aircraft mechanics are expected to increase, driven in part by the growth in maintenance, repair, and overhaul activity that has accompanied the expansion of business and commercial aircraft fleets. Employment opportunities are expected in the manufacturing and overhaul sectors.
