Prerequisites

1. Complete BIO 107 Human Biology with a grade of C or better
within the last five (5) years.
2. Complete ALH 104 Health Informatics with a grade of C or better
within the last five (5) years.
3. Complete OTA 101 Introduction to OTA with a grade of C or better
within the last five (5) years.
4. Minimum of 2.0 Cumulative GPA.

Process

A maximum of thirty students per year may be accepted into the Occupational Therapy Assistant program.  The following selection procedure is used:

1.  Applications are reviewed at the end of each quarter.
2.
Acceptance is on a "rolling admission" basis.  Applicants who have
successfully completed the pre-admission requirements will be accepted
    on a quarterly basis.
3. In the case of limited positions in the program, applicants will be ranked
according to the number of non-OTA courses in the curriculum which have
    been successfully completed.
4. If more than one applicant has the same number of completed courses,
the applicants will be ranked according to GPA.

5. Sinclair Community College recognizes the unique characteristics and

attributes of individuals aspiring to careers in the health professions.
Consequently, the college's Equal Opportunity guidelines apply to
    admissions to special programs.
The college strives to assure an
appropriate representation of students within the
health-related programs,
which is consistent with the philosophy and mission of this
institution as
    well as the community.

Accelerated Admissions for Academic Achievement

The Occupational Therapy Assistant program will be incorporating an Accelerated Admission for Academic Achievement pilot into their admission process beginning Fall Quarter 2008. This new model for admission is in addition to the open enrollment admission Sinclair Community College has for its programs, and will not prevent students who meet the established program prerequisites from being accepted on a space-available basis.

A percentage of students accepted into the program for Fall 2008 will be based on meeting the following criteria:
1. A minimum GPA of 3.0.
2. Each course in the OTA curriculum which has been completed
    must have
passed at the first attempt.

Once that criterion has been met, students being admitted under the model will be ranked according to the number of courses within the OTA curriculum that they have completed.

Waiting List Protocol

Beginning each Fall Quarter applications will be reviewed for the following academic year.

1. If there are more qualified applicants than there are positions available,
the applicants will be placed on a waiting list.
2. Applicants will be placed on the list in order of the academic quarter in
which they completed the admission requirements.
3. Applicants completing within the same quarter will be ranked according
to the number of non-OTA courses in the curriculum they have successfully
    completed.

4. If more than one applicant has the same number of non-OTA courses
completed, those applicants will be ranked according to GPA.

5. Students will not be given a “number” or “position” on the waiting list.

They will be told in which academic year they are expected to enter
    the program.

Transfer of Courses into the OTA Program

Students requesting credit for previous coursework must submit an official transcript from the educational institution to the Office of Student Records

An academic counselor will review all submitted transcripts and set course equivalencies, according to State regulated standards, for all previous non-OTA coursework.

Any course that is listed as equivalent to a course within the OTA curriculum will be accepted as completed.

The chairperson of the OTA Department will assess any OTA courses the student is requesting transferred.  Documentation must be provided of each course description, course content and a syllabus.  A transferred course must have 75% of the same content to be considered as a substitution for a course within Sinclair’s OTA program.

The total content of all OTA courses will be considered in the transfer advising.  If it is determined that a student is lacking in a particular content area a specific learning contract may be established to allow the student to complete the content.  This contract will be part of a written transfer agreement into the OTA program.
