Test and Immunization Guidelines for Students Entering the Nursing Program
THE FOLLOWING ARE REQUIRED:
1. ANNUAL TUBERCULOSIS SKIN TEST
The two-step Mantoux test is required by the State of Ohio. Positive reactors
should have a baseline chest-X-ray.
2. RUBELLA VACCINE OR TITRE (3 Day Measles)
Susceptibility to rubella is determined by proof of immunization or laboratory
confirmation of rubella antibodies (a titre). History of disease is not reliable.
3. RUBEOLA VACCINE OR TITRE (5 Day Measles, Hard Measles, Red Measles)
Susceptibility to rubeola is determined by proof of immunization or laboratory
titre confirmation of rubeola antibodies. If titre indicates need for immunization,
one adult dose of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) will be necessary.
4. TETANUS AND DIPHTHERIA ADULT VACCINE (Td)
Written evidence of up-to-date immunization for tetanus and diphtheria
(original series of three, with boosters every ten years.)
4.1 The student should be able to give a reliable history of receiving a series
of three Td (or DTP) immunizations. If history is vague, especially if born
prior to 1945, s/he should receive primary series of two doses of Td with
a second dose two months later, and third dose one year after the second
dose. (Students in the second step of being immunized may be admitted
into the Nursing Program with the understanding that the student will
complete the series as requested.)
4.2 BOOSTER: The recommended dose (0.50 ml) of Td (adult) every 10
years. If a dose is administered sooner as a part of wound management,
the next booster is not needed for another 10 years. For persons whose
immunizations are still incomplete following wound management, the
remainder of recommended series should be given.
5. HEPATITIS B: Due to the potential for clinical exposure to blood and other
potenti-ally infectious materials, the student may be at risk for acquiring
Hepatitis B infection.
The Hepatitis B Vaccine can be received from the student's physician of
choice, employer, or a county health department. The Hepatitis B vaccine is
given in a series of three (3) injections as follows:
A. First injection at time of request.
B. Second injection one month after the first injection.
C. Third injection six months after the first injection.
The Sinclair Community College Nursing Student is responsible for:
A. Cost of the vaccine injections (3).
B. Completion of the series of injections.
C. Immunity blood testing following the series (antibody titre
recommended).
D. Notification to the college of the date the injections were received.
6. All Students must indicate a positive history of having had chicken pox. If
history is unclear of unknown, the student must be serologically tested for
immunity. Any student who is non-immune will be restricted from caring for a
patient with an active case of chicken pox, shingles or one who is known to
have been recently exposed. Chicken pox vaccine is recommended for non-
immune students.
INFLUENZA VACCINE (OPTIONAL): Students with chronic diseases such as diabetes and those diseases affecting the cardiopulmonary system are at risk and should consider immunization.
