The general attendance policy for Sinclair Community College is stated in the Student Judicial Affairs Code of Conduct Handbook. It is expected that all students will read and become familiar with the provisions of this policy, particularly the section which states that: "You are expected to be present at all class sessions." In the Nursing Program, attendance and punctuality in the clinical areas are critically important factors. Due to the comprehensive nature and programmatic demands of the nursing curriculum, it is vital that the Attendance Policy be understood and adhered to in order that all objectives for each nursing course can be satisfactorily completed.
The above stated information has been used as a basis for the development of attendance requirements relating specifically to the Nursing Program. The detailed provisions of this policy are indicated as follows:
1. If a class absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor or a fellow student to obtain the missed material and assignments.
2. The student is expected to attend all clinical/college labs. In the event that a clinical/college lab absence occurs, the amount of make-up time, if possible, is to be determined by the instructor, depending upon the student's performance.
3. In addition to the provisions cited in the previous paragraph (item 2), absence(s) may be assessed by the instructor if the student is expelled from a clinical location for one of the following reasons:
| a. | Being unprepared for the clinical laboratory. |
| b. | Assignments required by the instructor (video, CAI review, assessment/ care plans, teaching plans, study guide exercises, and/or college laboratory practice) not completed by date required. |
| c. | Repeated tardiness. |
| d. | Medical problems which jeopardize the patient, student, or the safety of others. |
| e. | Behavior/dress which is inappropriate and unacceptable in a clinical area. |
More than two clinical absences is considered excessive and may result in an unsatisfactory clinical performance, evaluation/grade.
4. Absences and makeup time will be determined by the individual course instructor.
5. Extenuating situations, which may result in alteration of the clinical attendance policy, will be up to the discretion of the course group with approval of the Department Chairperson.
