PAX-RN

What is the PAX-RN examination?
The PAX-RN is a standardized entrance exam for nursing students that identifies strengths and areas needing improvement related to beginning your nursing education. The exam is a multiple choice computerized test that assesses three main areas. All three sections must be taken in one test session. • Verbal skills – word knowledge and reading comprehension. • Mathematics – basic calculations, word problems, algebra, geometry, and graphs. • Science – general biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.

When is the PAX-RN examination given?
The PAX-RN is administered on an ongoing basis in the Testing Center, Room 10445. Once you register for the exam and pay the fee, you may take the exam on a day convenient for you. The hours for the exam are those of the Testing Center. The exam requires four (4) hours to complete, so you must be at a computer four hours before the Testing Center closes.

How do I register to take the PAX-RN?
Once requirements for admission are complete, make an appointment with the Life and Health Sciences Advisors in Room 11-346. Call (937) 512-3700 to schedule the appointment. The Advisor will check your records for eligibility and give you the steps for registering for the exam. Students must begin registration in the Advisor’s office.

Is there a charge to take the PAX-RN?
The cost is $50. This fee is not refundable for any reason. Payment is made to the Bursar’s Office. The Bursar accepts cash, personal checks, credit cards or money orders. KEEP YOUR PINK AND WHITE PAID RECEIPT. BRING THE RECEIPT AND A PHOTO I.D. (i.e., DRIVER LICENSE, STUDENT I.D.) TO THE TESTING CENTER AT THE TIME OF THE TEST.

What is the best way to prepare for the PAX-RN?
The SCC Bookstore carries a commercial guide for PAX-RN examination preparation. Other area bookstores may be contacted as well.

Are there any courses that will help with preparation for the PAX-RN?
The following courses are recommended for preparation: CHE 120 Intro to Chemistry, DEV 101 Fund of Composition, ENG 111 English Composition I, ENG 116 Advanced Vocabulary, and EXL 102 Spelling and Vocabulary.

When and how will I get the results of the PAX-RN?
You will receive your test scores at the end of the exam. You must print the results and take the scores to the LHS Advisor’s office, room 11346, to determine your next steps.

How will I know if I passed the PAX-RN?
In order to be eligible for the nursing program, students must successfully pass three areas, verbal, math, and science, at the 50th percentile. In the “ALL” column, the scores must be at the 50th percentile or higher.

If I did not successfully pass a section of the PAX-RN with a score at the 50th percentile or above, what are my options?
Students who do not pass a section of the test have two options: (1) retake the part(s) of the exam not passed, or (2) complete the following course(s) to remediate for scores below the 50th percentile: Verbal - HIM 121 (Medical Terminology); Math - MAT 106 (Life and Health Sciences Math); Science -BIO 107 (Human Biology). Courses must be passed with no less than a “C” grade.
