Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Sinclair Nursing program a two year program?
The entire program is designed, if taken on a full-time basis, to be completed in eight quarters. Nursing (NSG) courses begin in the second quarter. Other than electives, no NSG courses are offered in summer quarters.
Can I accelerate the course work?
No. The Nursing Program is designed so that each quarter builds on the course work from the previous quarter. NSG courses must be taken in sequence.
Does the Sinclair Nursing Program lead to the RN credential?
Yes. Sinclair Nursing graduates are eligible to take the N-CLEX RN examination developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. See the section of the Nursing website on program policies to learn about background checks prior to taking the N-CLEX-RN examination, as mandated by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
How often are students admitted to the Nursing Program?
Eighty students are admitted each Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.
Is there a waiting list for the Nursing Program?
Currently, students are able to take the first Nursing (NSG) courses within approximately 6 to 7 quarters of attaining program eligibility. Specific information is sent in writing as students become eligible.
Why is the list so long?
Sinclair’s Nursing Program has an excellent reputation for quality and for affordability. Therefore, it is very popular. In 2007, the program admitted 270 students, an increase of 22%. The faculty and administration are looking for ways to further expand capacity while maintaining quality.
How do I become eligible for the Nursing Program?
Students become eligible for the program when they pass all three sections of the PAX-RN entrance examination or when they complete remediation of the sections they do not pass by taking the course option outlined in the Admissions Policy. Notification to register for NSG 120 and NSG 121 comes in writing from the Nursing Office.
How will I know when I am eligible to take the PAX-RN entrance examination?
It is the students’ responsibility to notify the LHS Advisors' office when they have completed DEV and chemistry requirements. Students then receive a letter from the LHS advisors’ office confirming their eligibility and instructing them about how to register for the examination.
Will a higher GPA or completion of general education courses put me higher on the eligibility list?
No. Placement on the list is determined by application date and the date that the PAX-RN requirement is met.
How can I prepare for the PAX-RN Examination?
Study materials are available in the Sinclair bookstore. An old test is available in the LHS Advisors' office for copying and can be used as a guide to preparation. Two group information sessions are offered prior to scheduled test dates. Information about these sessions is provided when students register to take the exam.
Do I have to complete Nurse Aid Training before I can take the PAX-RN Examination?
No. In fact, unless a student plans to work as a nurses’ aid or complete additional training to work as a patient care technician or pediatric care technician in a hospital while waiting to begin the NSG courses, it is better to wait until shortly before program eligibility to complete the training. ALH 120, Nurse Aide Training, is offered at Sinclair each quarter. Students must pass this course or provide proof of STNA certification to meet the admission requirement.
What if I pass all or part of the PAX-RN examination?
Students who do not pass the examination should see an ALH counselor to explore the option of course remediation.
What if I complete all non-nursing courses in the curriculum and have still not begun the nursing course sequence?
Students who are not actively enrolled in courses may stay on the eligibility list without penalty. Students who wish to continue to take courses should consider beginning coursework required for the Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree if they are interested in continuing to this level. ALH counselors and the counselors in the Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) Division have information about these courses at Sinclair. Students can also visit the websites of area colleges and universities offering the BSN to determine specific general education requirements.
Will the Sinclair Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Nursing from Sinclair transfer to BSN programs?
Yes. Most area colleges and universities have BSN completion programs for RN’s. The entire AAS degree transfers as a “block” of credit. This enables RN’s to achieve advanced placement and prevents repetition of Nursing coursework. The Sinclair Nursing Department webpage has links to area universities.
How much time will I spend in clinical experiences?
Amount of clinical experiences varies among nursing courses. Most require part of two to three days in the clinical area.
Where will I go for clinical experiences?
The Sinclair Nursing program utilizes clinical sites in a wide variety of hospitals, long-term care facilities and community agencies. Students must have reliable transportation options since they may travel as far as Middletown Regional Hospital, Dettmer Hospital in Troy, and Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia.
Can I attend part-time?
Many students complete all non-nursing courses on a part-time basis before beginning the NSG sequence. Clinical Nursing courses, although they may award as few as seven credits, require more time than non-nursing courses as three hours of clinical time are equal to one hour of class time. Also, faculty give many assignments that require additional time in the Nursing Learning Labs. Therefore, the amount of time “part-time” nursing students spend on course work often exceeds their expectations.
