The Psychology Department of Sinclair Community College is devoted to providing quality education in the study of human behavior through both the traditional classroom setting and distance learning environments. With an academically diverse faculty that reflect the many differing philosophies and subfields of psychology, we are committed to meeting the academic needs of all of our students. We count among our department's strengths, our unilateral dedication to effective teaching, our ongoing efforts to maintain a variety of courses and educational formats, and our deep appreciation for the richly diverse student population that comes to us with a variety of personal and academic backgrounds.
Why Take Psychology?
Good question! But have you ever wondered if your newborn baby really thinks and remembers their experiences? Or have you questioned how your brain works and why it sometimes fails? Maybe you would like a better understanding of your teenager, your spouse, or your aging parents? Have you ever wondered why your golf game seems to get worse the harder you try? Or perhaps you would like to learn more about psychological disorders such as depression and schizophrenia? Possibly you could use a refresher on stress management and burnout? Or would you like a few more parenting techniques to try out? Would you like to know why drugs affect your brain and behavior? Or maybe you just want your dog to come when you call him and so a little more knowledge about learning theory would help? These and a thousand more are the questions that all of us ask in our everyday lives and psychology is the field that organizes what science has discovered in an attempt to answer them all!
Personal Growth and Insight
Personal growth and insight is one of the many reasons that students at Sinclair take psychology courses. Just as someone might take a course to improve their computer skills or perhaps their golf swing, you might come to the Psychology Department to learn through courses on Parenting, Sports Psychology, Stress Management, Adolescent and Adult Development, African-American Psychology, Human Relations, etc. Be sure to check out our Course Descriptions page to learn more about all of the exciting options we can offer you!
Pursuit of a Technical Degree
Pursuit of a technical degree is another reason our students come to us. Sinclair offers many two-year Associate degrees and many of these programs include psychology courses as part of their core requirements. All of these programs typically require completion of an Introductory Psychology course to give you an overall understanding of human behavior; then add two or three more courses from our wide array of courses offered. Sinclair's Academic Divisions page can direct you to these many technical programs offered.
Enrollment in the University Parallel Program
Enrollment in the University Parallel Program is still a third reason our students come to us. The Liberal Arts, Communication and Social Sciences Division of Sinclair Community College offers the Associate of Arts (A.A.) and the Associate of Science (A.S.) degrees as the highest level that can be attained at Sinclair. Neither of these is intended to be your last step in education. However, they are a great first step! After successful completion of your A.A. or A.S. in Liberal Arts at Sinclair, you will be well on your way toward completing your University Baccalaureate program for your B.A. or B.S. degree. Be sure to work closely with your academic counselor to be sure you are taking the most appropriate courses for your program of study.
So, why take psychology?
Why not?? We have courses that cover so many aspects of your life and of those around you! Wouldn't it be nice to find an answer to all of those many questions?!
