Whether you're new to Sinclair Community College or a returning student, a degree-seeker or looking for personal or professional enrichment, this is probably your first encounter with learning in a web-based environment. This online mini-course will introduce you to the technology and overall skills and habits necessary for success in web-based courses. As you read about these topics (in the sections under the heading Modules above), you'll have a better understanding of what you'll need to focus on in order to have the best possible learning experience in a Sinclair online course. Online distance learning requires many of the same skills as face-to-face classroom learning, such as effective communication and time- and stress-management, as well as good reading skills and basic study habits. But students often find that success with online distance learning requires greater awareness and exercise of those skills and habits -- not to mention experience using computers and the internet. Working in an unfamiliar medium can be like visiting a new country, with new customs and skills to learn, or requiring you to apply old skills in new ways. This mini-course is designed to help prepare you for your first online distance learning encounters, to help diminish the "learning curve" associated with working in a new, technology-enhanced medium. Like the things you pack when visiting a new place, the skills you'll learn in the units (called modules) that follow are portable: You can bring them to any learning encounter, online or otherwise, with the knowledge that your abilities are always growing as you put them to use. Therefore, each module will suggest that you complete activities to help you assess which skills require more attention and practice on your part, to help ensure your success in online distance learning. The course begins with two self-assessments, so that you can judge for yourself which modules' topics can most enhance your development as a learner. And when you've looked over this site's materials, please let us know in the post-assessment what you found most helpful: Your feedback is important for helping us revise this course in the future! In this course you'll find Modules addressing the following topics:
