what this is
Course Title: Passport to Online Distance Learning

Description: This mini-course is being offered on a trial basis for current and potential online distance learning students, as an orientation to learning in Sinclair's online environment. It's free -- and hopefully both interesting and useful for understanding what you need to begin a journey into web-based learning at Sinclair.

  • If you are currently enrolled in an online Sinclair course, your instructor may ask that you read part or all of this mini-course, and may also ask you to complete some activities. We'd like your feedback when you're finished!
  • If you are just browsing this mini-course, we'd also like to hear from you: Click here to fill out the feedback form with your comments.
  • In either case, the information you provide in the Pre- and Post-Assessments will help us improve this course and Sinclair's online for-credit courses.

how to get around
The navigation to move around in this course is directly above, under the course name. In this bar, there are six areas, Course Information, Communication, Assessment, Resources, Modules and Help. When you roll your pointer over these title, the selection becomes highlighted. Once you've clicked on a heading, another sub-navigation bar appears below the navigation bar in the highlighted color, with additional informational pages linked by their titles. It is in YOUR best interest to read all of the pages under the headings Course Information, Communication, Assessment and Resources. Valuable information and answers to questions you may have can be found there.

The Modules menu lists the topics for this course. The modules are numbered. However, you may go to any module at any given point, although the first three modules cover introductory information that helps create a context for understanding the next three modules.

goals and expectations
Taking a course on-line is very different from taking a class on campus. In order to be successful in the online environment, you must be very self-motivated. You must be comfortable with receiving your course instructions in writing. You must be comfortable with interacting with your teacher and other students in writing. In addition, you must realize that online courses usually take as much time or more time than in-class courses and are either just as difficult or more difficult.

Don't, however, let this put you off: This mini-course will help you assess how good a "fit" online distance learning is for you. As you progress through the modules, you'll find information and activities that will help you recognize and practice the necessary skills for success in the online learning environment. Before you begin the modules, take the Self-Assessment Survey: Are distance-learning courses for me? ; this short assessment will indicate what areas of the following modules to focus your study on. The Technology Skills Survey will help you gauge your degree of experience with computers.
