Overview
One of the most important areas for the online distance learning student to master is effective communication. Not only is it important to stay in touch with the instructor and other students, not to mention Sinclair's support services, but effectively using the communiation tools available through WebCT is crucial as well. Add to this the special challenges of the online environment, and many beginning online students can feel isolated, depressed, underserved and unnoticed.

The first step to effective communication in the online environment is to assess your needs and learn what works best for you. Recognizing what practices are less effective or counterproductive will help you maximize the value of your interactions with fellow students and your instructor, too.

Learning Objectives
After completing this module, the student will be able to:

Name some of the important challenges of online communication for students
Analyze the student's own challenges and match strategies to overcome or manage those challenges
Define the term "netiquette," and how it applies to online distance learning
Recognize the communication tools available in WebCT
