Overview
Online Learning FYI: Modular Organization

Modules are units of study organized around a specific topic.

When you begin a new module, start by reading its Overview page, which summarizes the information contained in the module.

Then go back to the top of the page and click on the Learning Activities link to find your assignments for the module and the order in which they should be completed. One of these assignments will be to read the E-Lesson, which is simply the online course's "electronic lesson."

For many people, achieving the level of education they desire can be frustrated by constraints of time and place: Today our lives are so busy with work and family, it's not easy to come to a college campus to take a class.

Online distance learning is an innovation in the delivery of educational content that helps solve this problem. Learning online through Sinclair takes a number of forms; but for most students, it means tailoring the time and place you do your learning to your own schedule. In this module, we'll inventory the skills, technological resources and learning styles needed for success in the web course environment.

Learning Objectives

Online Learning FYI: Module Learning Objectives

Just as every course has objectives or goals for your learning overall, every module has its own set of learning objectives.

By knowing what those competencies are as you begin a module, you can more efficiently focus your learning priorities and study time.

After completing this module, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of online distance learning.
  • Identify the reasons some students benefit more from online distance learning than from traditional education delivery modes.
  • Begin to assess the student's own learning goals, needs and resources.

Assessment

Online Learning FYI: Assessment Activities
The Module Overview page will often include this heading, describing an activity aimed at helping the student and instructor assess the student's understanding of course material. This could be a quiz submitted for evaluation, a practice quiz that you take for your own benefit, a writing assignment, or some other activity intended to give you and your instructor a better sense of your progress.

Take the Self-Assessment, Are Online Distance Learning Courses Right for Me? and the Technology Self-ssessment. Score them yourself to gauge how much and what kind of preparation you'll need before taking a web-based distance learning course. The modules following this one will help fill in those skills and resource needs.

Be sure to complete all Learning Activities.
