Communication Overview
Online Learning FYI: Communication Tools

Important Note: The information below refers to communication tools for courses using the WebCT course management system (Click here or on the word "WebCT" to learn more).

Since you are seeing this course outside the WebCT environment, these tools are not available for use in this course. However, these tools are used in many online courses at Sinclair. Reading this overview will help familiarize you with how WebCT communication tools can enhance your online learning experience.

Calendar
The calendar is used by the instructor for reminders and due dates for your convenience.

For a look at a sample Calendar and how you can best use its features, see Module 4: Planning Your Journey: Effective Time Management for Online DL.

The Discussion Forum
discussion forum iconThe Discussion Forum provides three main functions to the user: the ability to post, read and search for bulletin board messages. It is an important information source because it provides messages from the instructor, as well as the collective questions, answers and comments of students in the current course session concerning course-related material.

You will often be directed to post comments, assignments, critiques and other responses to the Discussion Forum. In most instances, your comments will be public and available for everyone in the class to see. However, some instructors may set up private discussion forums to facilitate group work or similar activities. In this case, only the members of the private discussion forum and the instructor will see the posted information.

The Discussion Forum is divided into different forums which may be grouped particular subjects.

You'll find more information on using the Discussion Forum effectively in Module 5: Speaking the Language: Effective Communication Online.

Course Mail
This is an e-mail tool that is specific to this course and only this course. If you are taking another web course here at Sinclair that uses WebCT, there will be mail specific to that course. You will not be able to e-mail people outside of this course using this tool.

The Mail System provides three main functions to the user: the ability to send, read and search for mail messages. It is an important communication tool because it allows private messages to be sent from one participant to another, including the instructor. The system is divided into two boxes (folders) for each user:

Inbox contains all messages which have been received from other users
Outbox contains all messages which have been sent to other users

To learn more about using mail effectively, see Module 5: Speaking the Language: Effective Communication Online.

Chat
The chat room is a live discussion area where you can communicate in "real time". When you type, your classmates can see what you write. These messages only last as long as the discussion is ongoing; that is, once a session of chat is ended, the messages disappear.

To learn more about the chat room, see Module 5: Speaking the Language: Effective Communication Online.
