ACADEMIC DIVISIONS

System Requirements

You don't need the latest or greatest computer to take an online course at Sinclair. But there are some requirements. If your computer doesn't meet these requirements, it won't hurt anything. It just may not work as it should! Instead of hassling with your computer the night of an online exam, check your computer now so you know you'll be ready.

For help determining if your computer meets any of these requirements, call Sinclair's Technical Help Desk at 937-512-4357 (local) or 1-866-781-4357 (toll-free), or email them at helpdesk@sinclair.edu.

Hardware

You will need regular and reliable access to a computer that meets the requirements below. You may also use the computer labs on campus. At the downtown campus, these are located in 13-223, 14-109, and 7-000 (the lower level of the Library). The Englewood and Huber Heights Learning Centers each have a computer lab as well.

  • A PC or Mac that supports at least 1Gb RAM, however only 512Mb needs to actually be installed.
  • CD/DVD Player
  • Windows 98 or higher OR, MAC OS X or higher
  • 120-500 MB free hard disk space
  • A 56 kps dial-up modem (or higher)

Internet Access

You will need to have regular and reliable access to a computer that has access to the Internet. If this is your home computer, you will need an Internet account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Browser

You will also need to use a supported, javascript-enabled browser that doesn't block popups. These are listed at the link below. For help determining if your browser is on the list or help obtaining a new browser (they're free!), contact Sinclair's Technical Help Desk.

Supported Browsers For PCs and Macs

Other Software Requirements

Besides a compatible browser, you do not need any other software to take most online courses at Sinclair. There are a few exceptions, though.

For example, many of the Business Information Systems (BIS) courses teach particular software like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and you must have the right version of that software to take the class. To find out the version you need, call the BIS Department (937-512-2892) or check the book list for the course at the Online Tartan Campus Store.
