BUSINESS INTERNSHIP and CO-OP DEPARTMENT

"TEST DRIVE YOUR CAREER"

InternshipWhat is it?

An internship (sometimes referred to as professional practice) is a supervised work experience related to the student’s major or career program.  The internship can be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid, but a key feature of the internship is that the student does meaningful work over a period of time at a sponsoring agency location.

InternshipWhy should I consider an internship?

A study conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (2006 - Experiential Education Survey) revealed that employers extended job offers to more than 70 percent of their interns.  This same survey data suggest that employers value the internship programs as a means for helping them hire new college graduates.

Other reasons include …

  • Develop new skills and gain professional work experience, thus enhancing marketability.
  • Class-room learning becomes more meaningful with real-world experience.
  • Test the career to help students figure out what type of work setting and industry is right for them.
  • A great resume builder.
  • Learn from experienced professionals and create a network of contacts – all while earning academic credit.

InternshipAm I eligible?

Yes, students must be registered as a full-time or part-time student at Sinclair Community College with a Grade Point Average of 2.00 and enrolled in the Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science Degree programs affiliated with the Business or Public Services Division.

InternshipWhen do I begin?

It is never too early to begin planning for an internship experience.  The process can take several weeks or even months; therefore it is wise to begin at least a quarter prior to the quarter in which you want to intern.

InternshipHow do I begin to find an internship?

Begin by answering some questions:

  • What are your goals?
  • What kind of internship do you desire?  Do you want to work during the summer or a specific quarter?
  • What do you want to get out of the internship experience?
  • Is there a specific business or industry for which you want to work?

Once your basic questions are answered, you may wish to:

  • Examine internship guidebooks like Peterson’s Internships and The Internship Bible.
  • Contact the Division’s Internship and Cooperative Education Coordinator for guidance or a complete overview of the program at Sinclair.
  • The internet offers a wealth of information on internships.  Just type in internships using Google.
  • Check local newspapers.
  • Contact local chambers of commerce.
  • Attend Career Fairs.
