Travel and Tourism students are required to complete a 3 credit hour internship near the end of their Sinclair curriculum. However, students can begin working in an on-going, career- related job (Co-op) much earlier in the academic program. The internship requires the student to work 15-20 hours per week for an entire academic quarter (10-12 weeks). Internships can be paid or unpaid, but on-going Co-op positions are paid.
Students earn academic credit based on learning they incur in the workplace environment, documented through a structured series of academic assignments, including a work/learning contract, a paper and an evaluation session by the faculty mentor. Students receive a letter grade (A-F) based on the completion of these assignments and job performance.
The ideal internship experience includes duties from the following list of specific tasks that relate to the base of skills and competencies that the Travel Professional develops during academic preparation. Although internship sites cannot possibly provide opportunity in each area, a variety of opportunities will enhance the student’s transition to the workplace and allow the employer to observe strengths and areas needing improvement. These assignments act as a starting point from which the intern’s work/learning objectives are developed and performance is evaluated by the faculty coordinator.
