Employer Guidelines for Computer Information Systems (CIS) Internships

CIS (Computer Information Systems) majors can earn 9 credit hours of internship that can be substituted for 3 Business elective classes.  This is achieved in increments of 3 or 6 credit hours based on the number of hours worked per week.  3 credit hour internships require a student to work 15-20 hours per week for an entire academic quarter (10-12 weeks).  6 credit hour internships require a work schedule of 30-40 hours per week for the entire quarter.   One-quarter internships can be paid or unpaid.

Students earn academic credit based on learning they achieve in the workplace environment, documented through a structured series of academic assignments, including a work/learning contract, a paper or project and an evaluation session by the faculty mentor.  Students receive a letter grade (A-F) based on completion of these assignments and job performance.

An ideal internship includes assignments from a variety of technical experiences.  The following list of tasks relate to the base of skills and competencies that the CIS student develops during academic preparation.   Although internship sites cannot provide opportunity in each area, a variety of opportunities will enhance the student’s transition to the workplace and allow the employer to observe strengths and areas needing improvement.  These assignments act as a starting point from which the intern’s work/learning objectives are developed and performance evaluated by the faculty coordinator.
