BUSINESS AND PUBLIC SERVICES INTERNSHIP DEPARTMENT

What is an internship?

An internship is a supervised work experience related to the student’s program and career intentions. The internship can be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid, but the key feature  is that the student does meaningful work over a period of time.

Why should I consider an internship?

A study conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (2006 - Experiential Education Survey) revealed that employers extended job offers to more than 70 percent of their interns. This same survey data suggest that employers value the internship programs as a means for helping them hire new college graduates.

Other reasons include …

  • Develop new skills and gain professional work experience which will enhance marketability.
  • Classroom learning becomes more meaningful with real-world experience.
  • Test the career to figure out what type of work setting and industry is right.
  • A great resume builder.
  • Learn from experienced professionals and create a network of contacts – all while earning academic credit.

 Am I eligible?

Yes, students must be registered as a full-time or part-time student at Sinclair Community College with a Grade Point Average of 2.00 and enrolled in the Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science Degree programs affiliated with the Business or Public Services Division.

 When do I begin?

It is never too early to begin planning for an internship experience. The process can take several weeks or even months; therefore it is wise to begin at least a quarter prior to the quarter in which you want to intern.

How do I find an internship?

Answer some questions:

  • What are your goals?
  • What kind of internship do you desire? Do you want to work during the summer or a specific quarter?
  • What do you want to get out of the internship experience?
  • Is there a specific business or industry for which you want to work?

Once your basic questions are answered, you may wish to:

  • Check out guidebooks like Peterson’s Internships and The Internship Bible.
  • Contact the Division’s Internship Coordinator  or ask the appropriate department chair for guidance.
  • Use the internet to access job searches.
  • Check local newspapers.
  • Contact local county and city offices.
  • Attend Career Fairs.
  • Utilize networking sources such as: faculty and campus contacts, other students, friends and family members, former employers and co-workers and professional contacts.
