Supply Chain Management
A.A.S. General Business Management, Supply Chain Management Concentration

What is Supply Chain Management?

Virtually every business and government agency is involved in the fundamental Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes and practices, which focus on the identification, procurement, and movement of goods between suppliers, manufacturers, and consumers.

SCM includes the coordinated processes for:
·         Identifying needs for raw materials, supplies, and components;
·         Developing specifications;
·         Computing quantity requirements;
·         Selecting sources and negotiating procurement agreements;
·         Acquiring, transporting, and storing inventory;
·         Maintaining operations; and,
·         Managing logistics.

What are the career opportunities?

·         The specialized study of Supply Chain Management (SCM) is growing in importance as consumer expectations, industry advancements, and global competition create strategic challenges for businesses.
·         In both the private and public sectors, career professionals are needed in such areas as Auditing, Cost Estimating, Contract Management, Financial Management, Inventory Management, Life Cycle Logistics, Packaging Management, Procurement, Program Management, Requirements Management, Supply Management, Transportation, Warehousing.

Are there career opportunities in the local area?

Driven by DoD needs, the greater Dayton area has a major concentration of over 6,000 professionals employed in various areas of supply chain management, in the private and public sectors. Other public agencies (for example the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency) and private businesses (shipping, trucking, order fulfillment, warehousing) hire such individuals as well. Ohio has the nation’s sixth largest civilian workforce working in these professions, responsible for procuring goods and services and assuring global delivery to the U.S. military whenever the goods and services are needed. DoD data indicate that 50% of their civilian workforce is eligible to retire. Thus, the local market need is critical to train and retain supply chain management professionals. In addition, regional economic development associated with I70/75 commerce drives a growth in the need for industry SCM specialists.
