IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL APPLICANTS FOR THE ACADEMY
A recent February 19, 2010 Ohio Court of Appeals court ruling has upheld and confirmed that ANY drug conviction of Ohio Revised Code 2925.11 - INCLUDING a minor misdemeanor conviction for possession of drugs IS a conviction that places that person under disability making it UNLAWFUL FOR THAT PERSON TO POSSESS A FIREARM.
The Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy has decreed any such person with a drug conviction, including a minor misdemeanor drug conviction, is barred from attending basic peace officer training until such time that person has had the firearms disability lifted by court order.
A large number of minor misdemeanor drug convictions involve possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Any applicant who has such conviction and fails to obtain the required relief WILL NOT be permitted to attend the academy.
During the application process, applicants shall swear or affirm under oath that they have no such convictions without relief. Any applicant found to have falsified their affidavit will immediately be removed from the academy without refund and the matter will be referred to the prosecutor's office for criminal charges.
Ohio Revised Code section 2923.14 details the necessary steps for obtaining relief from Weapons under Disability status.
