Brief Description of Program:

Eastern Kentucky University is located in Richmond, KY –approximately 25 miles from Lexington, KY. We are a moderately based institution with roughly 15,000 students (includes extended campuses Manchester, Corbin, and Danville (3,000) and graduate students). Of the enrollment, approximately 12,800 are undergraduate students working on their two-year or four-plan degrees. EKU prides itself on being able to offer our students the best of both academic worlds – all the opportunities available at a large, state college along with the individual attention common at so many small, private institutions.

We average freshmen class size is approximately 2,000 – and while that seems large, with a student faculty ratio of 17:1, we are able to keep our classroom size down to an average of just 25 students.

Eastern Kentucky University is a teaching institution as opposed to a research institution, meaning all of our classes are taught by professors with Ph.D.’s and not by graduate or teaching assistants. Less than one percent of our staff are graduate assistants, which says a lot about the emphasis EKU places on education. This is extremely important – you will be learning from people who have experience in the fields you will be studying and can give you a lot of “hands-on” opportunities.

EKU has 168 majors to pursue through our five colleges. Nationally, our university is recognized for the following programs:

  • Criminal Justice
  • Fire and Safety
  • Forensic Science (Biology and Chemistry)
  • Aviation (we are one of the few schools in nation to offer this 4-year program)
  • Interpreter Training (only program in Kentucky)
  • Athletic Training (only ACCREDITED program in Kentucky)
  • and Education (Special Ed., Primary, Middle Grades, and Secondary).
