All steps must be completed to take a course for Honors credit and have Honors designation appear on your transcript
1. Student registers for classes.
2. Students interested in doing an Honors Contract - that is, getting Honors credit for a course in which he/she is registered but it is not on the list of Honors courses that quarter – should contact the instructor and ask for an Honors Contract. Many instructors are willing; some are not. Honors is a privilege, not a right, please be respectful of instructors who choose not to do an Honors contract. This is why we create a list of course available for Honors each quarter. These instructors guarantee the course is available for Honors.
3. Print directions for completing an Honors contract or stop by the Honors office to pick up and give to your instructor. The instructor will complete the Contract online and give you a copy. It is also recommended the instructor print of copy for his/her records.
4. Student should bring the completed contract and his/her fee bill to the Honors Program office, room 10-339 to complete an Eligibility Form. Eligibility Form must be completed by the Monday, January 14, 2008 at 5:00 PM. This form is required to have the Honors designation applied to Student’s transcript after completing the course with an A or B.
To complete the Honors Contract form, please understand the requirements. Criteria for all Honors courses are set out in the Faculty Handbook, which you should consult before deciding on the criteria for making this an Honors course. Note in particular that Honors credit always requires some kind of class presentation.
Faculty - Guidelines and tips for writing an Honors Contract:
- Develop one or two that you consistently use and have it approved by the Honors Program director.
- Be specific about the project topic, length and expectation.
- Be specific about the oral presentation.
- Include assessment or grading criteria.
- Type it up and have it ready to go for students who request one.
- Make it a challenge!
Examples of appropriate Honors contracts have been posted below. Please reference these contracts to help you create your own!
Examples:
If this contract is completed, the student will be regarded by Sinclair as having taken the course for Honors credit, and the contract will be kept on file for future reference. The Honors Director will supply a letter, when asked, certifying that the course was taken for Honors credit. HOWEVER, the course will not appear on the transcript as Honors unless the Eligibility Form is signed by the Student and the Honors Program Director or Academic Counselor. THIS SHOULD BE DONE NO LATER THAN MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 2008 AT 5:00 PM. It cannot, under any circumstances, be done 'retroactively,' after the quarter ends.
