a complete syllabus will be posted here soon. In the meantime, here is a description from the instructor:
The immersion course is a university-parallel course and as such it will cover at least the same material in the regular SPA101 classes. However, we will do additional readings and learn about Hispanic culture to a greater depth.
The immersion method is a demanding method of instruction but one that can yield great rewards. I have been trained in this methodolgy and have used it for several years. The instructor speaks only in Spanish during the entire class. Students are expected to sign a Language Pledge (modeled after Middlebury College's famous Language Pledge) affirming that they will also speak only Spanish in class and at the conversation table. Since this is a beginning class, copious visual aids and English-language instructions are provided to assist students in using only Spanish in class.
As with all honors courses, students will be required to write a paper and give a class presentation. The paper will be written in English but the presentation will be in Spanish.
