Internship requirements are 10 - 15 hours per week; work for college credit and/or on the job experience. We are looking for someone who enjoys a variety of activities. Someone who is equally comfortable organizing and labeling radios or reading on air in our radio studio. The ideal candidate will have a friendly, professional demeanor on the phone, and be an excellent reader -- either live, over the air or when recording. Basic office skills, like downloading newspaper articles from the internet are necessary. Creativity and good writing skills are needed to help WORDS Coodinator with special projects, public service announcements, and more. In conjunction with the Executive Director and the Board Development Chairman, the Agency Intern will plan for and provide support for the Board of Trustees annual retreat and will assist with other activities in the strategic and planning process. With the Board of Trustees Communications Chairman and Executive Director, will assist in developing a communication plan using comprehensive media; print, e-news, and website. May be asked to write/edit quarterly Agency Newsletter, and program-specific information updates. Reports to the Executive Director. Please Note: For all positions, volunteers must attend an orientation and participate in additional departmental training. Volunteers are provided with the necessary tools and resources to be a successful part of the Cincinnati Museum Center Volunteer Team. These Internship positions are UNPAID.
Zoology Assistant - Part time eight week internship, two 4-hour days per week; one weekend day preferred. Main responsiblity is to ensure that animals and animal facilities are appropriately cared for and maintained, along with conducting regularly scheduled animal-based educational programs for Museum guests. Work schedule includes assisting the Animal Resources department in caring for several species of local snakes, turtles and mammals, as well as local and exotic fish and invertebrates, conducting animal based educational programs for Museum visitors of all ages and educational backgrounds. Each week, this intern is expected to master the skills necessary to care for and educate a diverse audience about one of our captive species. By the completion of the experience, the intern should feel competent in all basic aspects of animal care and animal based educational programming at CMC. The intern will have no direct contact with bats, unless the intern already has a current rabies pre-exposure inoculation. NOTE: CMC will not provide rabies inoculations to interns who do not already have them. Applicant must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Animal Hubandry, Zoo Science or related program, with a sincere interest in pursuing a career in animal care. Must be a team player with excellent organizational skills and the discipline to complete tasks independently. Must possess strong communication and customer service skills to efectively present animal based programming to diverse audiences, and to communicate with coworkers.
Youth Program Developer. Weekdays, Part time; one weekend day preferred. Assist in planning implementation of programs such as Summer Camps, Scout programs, and various Public Education programs. Will be required to research and write lesson plans. Assist with purchase or preparation of materials for upcoming programs and conduct materials inventory. This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills. Currently enrolled in an Education program, Museum Studies or related field. Previous experience with writing lesson plans. Must be a team player with excellent organizational and communication skills.
New Media Intern. Weekdays, 10-15 hours per week; occasional evenings and weekends preferred. Main responsibility is to assist with the development of new media resources for publication on Cincinnati Museum Center website and related outlets. Daily work schedule could include videotaping/photographing of CMC exhibits, lectures, and special events and development of audio files for podcasts, streaming video, and virtual exhibits based on identified priorities. Experience with creation of new media projects for the Internet. Must be a team player with excellent organization and communication skills. Experience with Audacity software a plus.
Paleontology Collections Intern. Weekdays; standard business hours. Positions are available in either Vertebrate or Invertebrate Paleontology. The intern(s) will be responsible for curatorial duties within portions of the Museum's extensive fossil collections. Under the tutelage of the Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology and other staff members, the intern will learn how to prepare research specimens and manage associated data through cataloging and databasing. A basic understanding of systematic biology or geology is desirable but not required in lieu of willingess to learn. Ability to follow instructions and familiarity with data entry or patience and respect for collections objects needed.
Zoology Research Intern. Weekdays; standard business hours. Positions are available in all sections of Zoology (Birds, Mammals, Insects, Mollusks, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fish). The intern would be responsible for curatorial duties for a small section of the collection. Under the tutelage of the Curator of Zoology, the intern would learn how to prepare research specimens and manage associated data through cataloging and databasing. A basic understanding of Biology is required (e.g. completion of the BIO-101-103 sequence or equivalent). Familiarity with a taxonomic group is desirable but not required.
Graphic Artist. Weekdays; standard business hours. Intern will design and produce a legible, easy-to-use interior map of the visitor traffic flow, floor exhibits, and program areas of the Museum of Natural History & Science at Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. Visitors and others will use this map during self guided tours of the Museum and to locate event locations. The opportunity exists to create a product that will not only greatly assist the Museum and its visitors, but to produce exciting, colorful imagery of an iconic and historic Cincinnati structure. Experience in the graphic arts with computer-assisted design skills. Creativity and independence are a MUST. Interest in educational techniques and in historic, monumental architecture a plus.
Paleontology Lab Intern. Museum operating hours, including weekends. The intern(s) will be responsible for preparation and conservation duties in the Museum's Paleontology Laboratory. Under the tutelage of the Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, Paleontology Technician and other staff members, the intern will learn how to prepare and preserve fossils as research and exhibit specimens and to collect and maintain associated contextual data. A basic understanding of systematic biology or geology is desireable but not required in lieu of willingness to learn. Patience, manual dexterity, good listening skills and respect for collections objects needed.
