ABOUT SINCLAIR

Accelerated Developmental English Pilot

Accelerated Developmental English pilot offers students who test just below college-level English to take a tutorial-based developmental English class as a co-requisite to college-level English composition.  Students who test at the high end of the exit DEV writing class (DEV 110) are being placed in a special topics class that allows them to take a condensed form of the class as a co-requisite to ENG 111.

  • Results from Spring 2010: 16/29 succeeded (55.2%) in ACA 297 compared to a 52% overall success rate with the comparable DEV 110 course.  However, this group only had 16/29 (55.2%) pass the ENG 111 course, compared to 63.1% overall for ENG 111.
  • Results from Summer 2010: 9/10 students (90%) passed ACA 297 compared to 69% in the equivalent DEV 110 course, and 9/10 (90%) passed the ENG 111 course, compared to 77.4% overall.
  • Results from Fall 2010: 21/30 (70%) succeeded in ACA 297 compared to a 66.2% in DEV110 and 72.3% success rate in English.  These data are promising data, given that success rates in English typically range between 70-73% and the students in this cohort tested significantly lower on Accuplacer than the average ENG 111 student.
